One year ago, the Junior League of Atlanta awarded one of its Centennial grants to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. This funding has had a transformational impact, enabling Children’s to launch the virtual Institute on Healthcare and Human Trafficking (the Institute), which is part of the Stephanie V. Blank Center for Safe and Healthy Children. The Institute is led by Jordan Greenbaum, MD, a world-renowned expert in human trafficking.

The Institute trains healthcare providers on how to recognize the signs of trafficking in their patients and then intervene appropriately. Research shows that 88 percent of victims saw a healthcare provider while they were being exploited. Yet, most healthcare providers have not received any training on the issue.

When the Institute launched, its initial goal was to train 1,000 healthcare providers over the course of two years. But with the Junior League of Atlanta’s support, it has exceeded its goal, training 2,803 providers as of July 2018. More than 1,200 of these providers are local to Atlanta.

The Institute has conducted trainings for medical staff at DeKalb Medical Center, Piedmont Henry Hospital and Northside Hospital Women’s Center, among many others. The program also trained medical, nursing, public health and pharmacy students at Georgia State University, Emory University, Kennesaw State University and Mercer University.

The Junior League of Atlanta has mobilized Atlanta’s growing healthcare industry to make an impact on this pervasive issue.
