Empowering Nonprofit Innovators to Accelerate Solutions
At Gas South, our core business is providing natural gas service to customers in the southeastern United States, but every day we strive to stay true to our purpose of being a fuel for good. One important aspect of this purpose is our pledge to give back 5% of our profits to organizations that help children in need. That’s why we partner with United Way of Greater Atlanta and we’re proud to be sponsoring SPARK Prize in the NW Region. SPARK Prize epitomizes social enterprise innovation. It’s a competition that awards grants to fund collaborative and innovative projects that address social challenges. You may be asking yourself, why focus on the northwest metro Atlanta area? Suburban poverty may not be as visible as it is in urban areas, but it’s growing at an alarming and unfortunate rate. While breaking the cycle of poverty and improving child well-being are common goals of the United Way, our strategies may need to adapt when working towards making changes in urban settings. And that’s exactly what SPARK Prize is doing. SPARK Prize is catalyzing new and innovative ideas for tackling these social challenges in areas outside the perimeter. We must empower people to be innovators and assist leaders to accelerate solutions, while thinking out-of-the-box. It’s only through collaboration and innovation that we’re going to move the needle for our children. Because when children thrive, communities thrive.
In 2015, its inaugural year, SPARK Prize awarded its grand prize of $20,000 to Helping Mamas to become “the food bank of baby supplies” for Greater Atlanta. Since then, it’s helped a high school student extend the reach of her nonprofit, CARE Closet, a school-based food pantry. And a top prize went to Goodr, a sustainable food waste management company leveraging technology to combat hunger. SPARK Prize is giving these dedicated organizations the lift they need to truly make an impact. That’s why Gas South is a proud sponsor.
While the submission deadline to submit for SPARK Prize has closed, join us to watch the finalists present “Shark Tank” style on May 18. You don’t want to miss the innovation and collaboration that nonprofits in Cobb, Paulding, Cherokee and Douglas counties are doing to address the critical issues children, families and communities are facing. We hope you’ll join Gas South in being a fuel for good!
