Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter Were Honored at the 2018 Bill Foege Global Health Awards

Former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, co-founders of The Carter Center, last month received the 2018 Bill Foege Global Health Award for their work in eradicating disease and the championing of mental health.

Before a gathering of more than 500 business and global health community leaders, the Carters accepted the honor presented by MAP International President Steve Stirling. The ceremony was emceed by multiple Emmy® award-winning chief medical correspondent for CNN, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and included testimonies on the progress of global health from MAP International CEO Steve Stirling, renowned global health legend Dr. Bill Foege and many others.

The Awards were presented to Former President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter, co-founders of The Carter Center, for their contributions in combating diseases in Africa and Latin America and restoring global health.

“We are honored to accept the award named for Dr. Bill Foege. He is my hero. Dr. Foege has helped us with almost everything we have done in global health,” said Mrs. Carter. She cited the work carried out during the Carter administration to boost early childhood immunizations in the United States. “I thank Dr. Foege for all he has done for our country and our world. I am grateful to receive this award in his name,” Mrs. Carter said.

Many notable Atlantans were in attendance including legendary Braves player Hank Aaron and his wife Billye, philanthropist Stephanie Blank, media mogul Ted Turner, and former Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services John Bardis.

The Metro Atlanta Chamber also announced its Global Health ATL initiative. Global Health ATL is designed to drive Atlanta’s reputation as the “center for global health.” The initiative’s cornerstone project is the creation of a health innovation district in the heart of metro Atlanta.

The city of Atlanta came together to honor the Carters at the second annual Bill Foege Global Health Awards. More than thirty Atlanta-based organizations sponsored this historic event including Gold Sponsors Cox Enterprises, Crazy Good Turns, Delta Air Lines, UPS, and the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. The event directly supports the mission of MAP International.

“We are very humbled by the outpouring of support by the Atlanta community,” said Stirling. “It was an incredible evening with the world’s most innovative minds in global health meeting with the top business executives. We are excited for the future of the Bill Foege Global Health Awards!”
