Give Thanks by Giving Back

“Help needs to get into people’s hands now. Not tomorrow, not later. Now.”
Yulín Cruz, Mayor of San Juan

A few weeks ago, the Mayor of San Juan begged for assistance after reporting that two people had died in the hospital because there was no power. Since then, we’ve gotten reports of surgeons performing operations by flashlight, people dying from illnesses related to contaminated water, and communities cut off from aid who still haven’t received medical assistance two months after Hurricane Maria.

Hearing stories like this from our healthcare partners on the ground spurred an incredible response from our volunteers and corporate and community partners. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, MedShare has:

  • Donated more than $200,000 in medical supplies, emergency equipment, and essential care items to Puerto Rico
  • Delivered more than 100 generators to assist in returning power to communities damaged by the storm
  • Supported more than 60 communities devastated by Hurricane Maria
  • Equipped nine medical mission teams traveling to Puerto Rico to provide aid
  • Completed 15 deliveries of supplies and equipment to hospitals, clinics, and communities in need of medical assistance across the island
  • Engaged more than 40 local companies and faith-based partners to donate supplies for hurricane relief

But there is still so much work to be done. Our neighbors in Puerto Rico still need our support and we’ll be there every step of the way.

As we approach the holidays and give thanks for the blessings in our lives, we ask that you remember those who’ve suffered in recent weeks and those who continue to struggle to rebuild their lives. I believe Martin Luther King Jr. said it best when he said, “Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.”

Please, let us remember those who need our help now, more than ever.

There are serval ways that you can get involved: volunteer or donate to our hurricane relief fund or to other organizations that are providing critical relief services to those impacted by Hurricane Maria. Give thanks by giving back and donate today.

Dr. Haack praised the healthcare professionals she worked with at Centro Medico in San Juan (where MedShare sent its first large shipment of disaster relief supplies this year). “I was both inspired and heartbroken to hear firsthand stories of how they continued to deliver patient care in the aftermath of the hurricane, despite food shortages for physicians and staff and operating rooms plunging into complete darkness in the middle of surgeries.”
