Stories of Atlanta

Look, up in the sky…

“Twinkle twinkle little star. How I wonder what you are.” You might ask, what in the world does a 19th century English lullaby have to do with a picture of a Coca-Cola sign stuck in the middle of nowhere? Good question, if you’re a first-time viewer. But if you’ve been here before, you know that connecting the dots between the seemingly unconnected is all in a days work for Stories of Atlanta.

This week we start with a hometown favorite, Coca-Cola. There are probably very few among us who wouldn’t jump at the chance to hop into the way-back machine and take advantage of the opportunity to buy a few hundred shares of the soft drink John Pemberton first poured out of Jacob’s Pharmacy in downtown Atlanta.

Of course, it wasn’t referred to as a soft drink back in Pemberton’s day. It was a drink for medicinal purposes, headaches in particular. And as the story goes, one patron of Jacob’s Pharmacy was so impressed with the drink’s curative powers that he bought the rights to the drink and created what would one day become the global corporation whose logo is among the most recognized in the world.

Simply put, Coca-Cola is everywhere, including outer space. And while it seems like we just gave you a big clue to the connection with that catchy little lullaby we mentioned earlier, it only seems that way. Which you’ll discover in this week’s Stories of Atlanta.

No doubt our hometown brew is recognized around the planet in places big and small…. popular and obscure. I can remember when our Atlanta area schools would sometimes even be given tablets and pencils supplied by the company to augment our familiar ‘blue horse’ style tablets and notebooks.
There is a whimsical and humorous 1980 movie produced in Africa in which the famous Atlanta bottle was given a starring role. Check out “The gods must be crazy–Coca Cola” sometime.Report
