MARTA begins installing Oakland City station elevator

Avatar

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has begun installing an elevator at the Murphy Avenue entrance of Oakland City Station.

The station primarily serves the Oakland City, Sylvan Hills and Capitol View neighborhoods and provides access to north and southbound rail service on the Red and Gold Lines, as well as bus routes 79 (Sylvan Hills), 83 (Campbellton Road/Greenbriar), 162 (Myrtle Drive/Alison Court), and 172 (Sylvan Road/Virginia Avenue). These bus routes service South Fulton Medical Center, Greenbriar Mall, College Park Safety Complex, and many neighborhoods and businesses.

When the rail station was built in 1984, an elevator shaft on the Murphy Avenue side was part of the original infrastructure. MARTA contractor Schindler Elevator will install a new elevator car and cables.

MARTA staff has been installing supporting equipment such as fire protection, elevator communications, CCTV cameras, and a new MARTA Police Department area in the concourse to ensure the safety and security of the station.

The current schedule has the elevator opening in mid-October, after a round of safety inspections and testing. MARTA and Schindler are working to complete the project sooner to better serve customers.

The elevator located in the concourse closer to the Lee Street entrance at Oakland City Station was recently refurbished as part of MARTA’s Elevator/Escalator Rehabilitation Program and is fully operational.
