MARTA BUS OPERATOR RECOGNIZED FOR BRAVERY

Avatar

Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) bus operator Winston Douglas was recently recognized for saving a woman’s life while on his route.

On Sept. 9, Douglas was driving his route on Ormond Street in southwest Atlanta when he saw a man attacking a woman. Douglas parked the bus, grabbed a stick from the ground outside, and hit the attacker, eventually chasing and holding him until police arrived.  Officers credit Douglas with saving the life of 63-year-old Terri Bradley who was stabbed 22 times during the attack.

Douglas was honored by Atlanta City Councilwoman Carla Smith at the full council meeting on Nov. 5. Smith, who represents the district where the crime occurred, said she was honored to recognize Douglas, calling him “a neighborhood hero who did not hesitate to take action in order to save a life.” Bradley was also there for the recognition, telling Douglas that on the day she was attacked, “you’re all I had.”

The Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation also recognized Douglas at its 9th Annual Breakfast With Our Bravest on Nov. 9. He was presented with the Civilian Award of Honor for what the executive director of the foundation called a “heroic act of bravery.”

Douglas suggests he’s not a hero. He says, “I was just doing what I felt God wanted me to do.”
