MARTA’S ARTBOUND PROGRAM COMMISSIONS MURALS IN FOUR RAIL STATIONS

Avatar

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) has commissioned local artists to paint murals in four rail stations. Work was completed last week on a mural titled The People Could Fly at the Ashby Station on MARTA’s Blue/Green rail lines.

The mural at Ashby was painted by Fahamu Pecou, with support from artists Denisha Claxton and Fabian Williams. It was made possible by the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, InvestAtlanta, the Transformation Alliance, WonderRoot, and MARTA’s Artbound program.

This is the third of four murals, with installations in place at King Memorial and Oakland City Stations, and a final piece planned for Hamilton E. Holmes Station later this spring.

“We love having the ability to feature local artists at our rail stations,” said MARTA Arts Administrator Katherine Dirga. “The mural transforms the feeling of the station and turns the space into a celebration of art and community.”

WonderRoot will sponsor a neighborhood block party in the spring to formally debut the Ashby mural.

One percent of MARTA’s annual budget is allocated to enhance the ridership experience through visual and performance arts. Past Artbound programs include live music and dance at rail stations during the holidays.
