Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed continues to attract campaign contributions at a rate that shows no signs of cooling as he prepares for election to a term that increasingly appears to be his second in office.
Reed has $1.6 million in cash on hand, according to a campaign disclosure report received July 6 by state campaign officials. Reed raised $320,621 and spent $161,141 during the second quarter of the year.
Reed’s financial prudence may be evident in the office furniture purchased for the campaign office. Reed’s campaign bought it from an online liquidator for $3,562. The next day, April 16, the campaign received a credit in the amount of $65.68, according to the report.
Reed’s personal financial disclosure statement shows no change in his personal financial posture in direct ownerships of business entities and real estate, according to information filed for 2011 and 2012. The 2012 report was filed June 28.
The amount Reed has raised in campaign contributions remains essentially the same in the second quarter as they were in the first quarter of the year.
The newly reported fund raising of $320,621 compares to $325,000 raised during the first quarter of 2013.
The pace in the first three months of 2013 represented a significant increase over the last half of 2012, as the mayor focused on fund-raising activities even as his administration worked to assemble a public financing program for the new Falcons stadium. In the last six months of 2012, Reed raised $200,000, reports show.
Reed’s major funders in the second quarter include 30 who contributed $2,500 each. They include:
- Atlanta Braves;
- Tom Cousins, chair emeritus of Cousins Properties;
- Atlanta Restaurant Partners, a company started by Maynard Jackson and now headed by Daniel Halpern, Brooke Edmond and Valerie Jackson;
- The re-election campaign of Reuben McDaniel, at-large member of the Atlanta Board of Education, current president/CEO of RM Capital Management, Inc., and former president/CEO of Jackson Securities, a company founded by the former mayor.
- Cathy Hampton, Atlanta city attorney;
- Muhtar Kent, chairman of the board and CEO of The Coca-Cola Co.;
- Pete Robinson, Atlanta managing partner of the law firm Troutman Sanders.
Reed’s campaign expenses indicate he’s taking nothing for granted – even though his two announced opponents have zero contributions and zero expenses to report.
Al Bartell’s report shows nothing to report. Paul Luna has not filed a report, according to the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission.
Reed hasn’t skimped on spending money where he thinks it’s needed. The expense report show shows the following:
- Anzalone Liszt Grove Research, polling and research – $47,100;
- Amelia Bower, fund raising consultant, $11,297;
- McKenna, Long and Aldridge, legal counsel, payment on deferred expense – $43,958.
Campaign contributions include contributions to:
Michael Julian Bond – $2,500;
Joyce Sheperd – $1,500;
Beau Biden III, attorney general of Delaware – $1,500.
Accelerated Auction Solutions is the online auction company Reed’s campaign used to purchase office equipment. The company’s past auctions range from personal estates to business equipment and inventory – everything from fine furniture to sports cards collections, and from woodworking companies to computer repair shops. The company’s motto is: “Turn your assets into cash … Fast simple, convenient.”
