A new transit website serving metro Atlanta is an example of local agencies responding to an idea many view as sensible, and which results from legislation that wasn’t enacted by the General Assembly.

In the first two weeks after its very soft launch, on July 1, ATLtransit.org has attracted slightly more than 1,000 views.
The website intends to help transit riders plan and pay for trips that involve riding one or more of the region’s transit systems. Four transit systems and ARC decided to build the site even though the Legislature did not vote for the concept brought forward by Sen. Brandon (R-Alpharetta).
Comments on a few blogs that have reported the website’s launch have observed that the site is less than robust and doesn’t have the same name as the one cited in Senate Resolution 735 – goatlatransit.com.
The reality is that the site was created voluntarily by entities that faced limitations.
They collaborated without legislative authorization, worked within their existing budgets, created pay platforms for the region’s four transit providers, and intentionally chose a name that’s slightly different from that in SR 735, in the event that legislation is re-introduced.

The site observes its own limitations and indicates users can help improve it over time. The site observes that it is the first attempt to provide a single source of information to plan a trip across jurisdictions. The site is mobile compatible.
As the site observes:
- “The trip planner has been built using free data and open source software. This means that the quality and features won’t be as robust as they would be with a product like Google Transit. There will be additional refinements to the trip planner based on feedback from the public to improve the quality and the value of the information provided to transit users in the region.”
In addition, the sponsors opted for a low-profile launch in order to provide time to fix any glitches before the site was swamped with traffic. By unveiling the website July 1, the site became active just before the long July 4 holiday weekend.
As Dick Anderson, vice chair of GRTA’s board, observed during an update on the website that was presented at the Georgia Regional Transit Authority’s March 12 meeting:

“We hear ‘website’ and it sounds simple, and yet as we’ve seen on the national level [with the rollout of the Affordable Care Act], it’s not so simple. When you talk about distribution of revenues, it has to have a system of imbedded functions. I’m glad to hear it’s moving forward and that we’re being clear about setting expectations.”
GRTA contributed to the site, along with MARTA, Cobb Community Transit, Gwinnett County Transit, and the ARC. The project leader was based out of the state’s Office of Planning and Budget, which serves as the governor’s budget-writing agency.
The four transit agencies and ARC present the website as a work in progress and ask for help in improving the site:
- “The website includes both an online survey and an email address where users of the site can provide feedback about their experience using ATLtransit.org. We want to know what information users find valuable, what information is lacking or contains errors, and what features we can provide to improve upon the site and help customers more easily navigate transit in metro Atlanta.”
The Senate passed Beach’s resolution and the House State Planning and Community Affairs Committee favorably reported the bill. The House did not vote on SR 735.

This site illustrates the inadequacy of present transit options. I could take MARTA bus, MARTA rail, and CCT bus to my job at a cost of 4 hours and $10 per day. Or I can drive my 2007 Corolla at a cost of 50 minutes and $13 per day.
I will continue to drive since 3 hours of my time is worth more than $3..
Burroughston Broch Yes you are correct and make no sense. This further begs the need for a new entity that is really about regional transit in Atlanta. Today we have a collection of operators that cannot even agree on a regional fare. Not only do you need to take multiple operators you need to buy tickets from both CCT and MARTA! How friendly is that?
Atlanta needs to get serious about regional transit and get away from piecemeal transit. Take the blankets and make a quilt. Let a regional entity run and operate the systems. If we want the city and region to grow we need a real plan and real action. Otherwise we sit on 85, 400, 75, and connector…

This website is a nice gesture but little else. Four hours and $10 per day to get from Dunwoody to the Galleria area and return is no service.
