Temporary public art to return to Atlanta’s BeltLine corridor

One of the highlights of last year was discovering public art along the Atlanta BeltLine corridor. The works by local artists were up several months, and they provided an element of unexpected surprise for the urban pioneers who venture on walks along the transformational corridor.
The temporary public art exposition was so successful that BeltLine leaders are launching another “Art on the BeltLine” exhibit for this fall.
Atlanta BeltLine Inc. has just announced that it has issued a Request for Proposals from artists who would like to participate in the 2011 version of the Art on the BeltLine exhibit.
“Artists throughout Atlanta’s eclectic communities are encouraged to submit proposals that marry their artistic visions with the landscape and sustainability themes of the city’s comprehensive redevelopment project,” according to a release from the ABI. “Proposals should reflect the historic, environmental, cultural, functional, urban design and/or aesthetic parameter of the potential sites and should be well-researched by the candidates.”
Proposals will need to be submitted by a March 28th deadline. And additional information on the RFP process can be found at: art.beltline.org.
The selected works of art will be installed beginning the week of July 25, and all projects must be completely installed no later than Aug. 31.
The Atlanta BeltLine Inc. has put together four workshops for artists who are interested in learning more about this opportunity.
Those four workshops will be held on: Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. at the West End Performing Arts Center; Saturday, Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. at the Abernathy Arts Center in Sandy Springs; Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Southwest Arts Center; and Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. at WonderRoot.
Atlanta BeltLine officials said last year’s exhibit was the largest temporary public art exhibit in Atlanta’s history. It included more than 270 visual artists, performers, musicians and historic preservationists.
