Knee Xray
An Xray of Maria's knee before knee replacement surgery. Notice the bone on bone.

Dear Readers,

Last Wednesday, I had a total knee replacement on my right knee. It’s a knee that had been compromised years ago, and it had finally reached a point of no return.

I will be taking some time off writing to focus on rest, rehabilitation and physical therapy.

The pain is intense, which is to be expected. But I’m fortunate to have excellent caregivers who are providing the right balance of support, encouragement and prodding to make sure I become fully functional in short order.

Thanks to all of you for your good wishes during this past week – especially those who voiced strong support for me and the SaportaReport team during a time when we were being criticized.

Looking forward to many more years of contributing to Atlanta’s civic conversation, and I am fortunate that all of you are part of the journey to make our city as great as it can be.

Warmly,

Maria

  1. Here’s to your complete recovery. It’s been a month since my knee replacement surgery and believe it or not it does get better Day by Day.

  2. Good luck..Do your PT no matter how much it hurts, then do it often on your own when you are home. You got to get the knee to bend 130 degrees..going up and down steps i found to be particularly useful..

  3. My dear wife has had 2 TKRs in the last 9 months. TKR — Total Knee Replacement

The key to success is to treat the physical therapy as a full time job, at least for the first month. That is all you do. When you’re not having the knee in a passive motion brace, or doing rehab exercises, you’re up on your feet. Yes, take the pain pills. That’s what they’re for.

But it works. You’ll hurt like hell all month, but the second month will be better and by the third you’ll be walking without pain. Stay with it!

Oh, cocoa butter can help with the scarring. I’m sure your knee doc’s folks can recommend a good brand to you.

  4. Wishing you strength and courage to do physical therapy rehab every single day, multiple times a day and patience to allow yourself to heal. I’m an ardent fan and look forward to your return.

  5. Best for speedy recovery:
    – focus on PT
    – return to writing as a mobile and pain-free Atlanta advocate
    – know you have big fan club!!

  6. Maria, I’m sending the most positive thoughts for your rapid healing and recovery! Let me know if there is anything I can do for you! You are expert at overcoming obstacles. Soon this will be a memory…and I truly hope that it really is soon! Best wishes!!

  9. May your recovery be speedy, Maria! The many friends who have had similar surgery all tell me that the secret of rapid and effective return to full mobility is the therapist! Sending a hug, Paula (LB)

  12. Maria, Get well soon. You should be proud of the tremendous work you have done to help make Atlanta a great city and better community.

  13. Highly satisfactory for me with regular physical activities at the age of 79. I have completed 10 km race twice only two years back. But for the past one year I have developed problem with right knee as the ligaments are torn, but there is no pain with my walking of 3km and cycling. But I want to come back to my original shape and again compete in 10 KM race.

  14. What a guide, I must say, your guides are awesome and I enjoy reading them. You write to the point and with a clear and eye-catchy UI, your blog looks great.
