Sustainable Design Can Be Beautiful

Avatar

In the fourth of this five-part video series, Paula Vaughan, Co-Director Sustainability for Perkins+Will, showcases some of the sustainable features of the new Perkins+Will office in Atlanta. This office, located at 1315 Peachtree Street, recently received LEED Platinum status with a score of 95. It is the current record holder for a LEED Platinum project in North America under the 2009 version of LEED for New Construction. For an exterior view of 1315 Peachtree Street, please view this video.

The first thing visitors to our offices on Peachtree Street notice is the beautiful fountain to the right of our lobby. In addition to providing a serene space, the fountain area, designed by Leo Alvarez, is also a part of the sustainability design of our building.

Rainwater is harvested from our roof and fifth floor terrace and stored in a 10,000-gallon cistern. It is filtered and treated onsite then used for 100% of the landscape irrigation and low-flow restroom flush fixtures for Perkins+Will, the Museum of Design Atlanta, and the Peachtree Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library. And the water you see flowing out of the fountain is recirculated, not wasted.

If you live in Atlanta you know that access to water is an issue for our city. As we were developed as a railroad hub, Atlanta is the largest city in the United States that is not near a major body of water. Considering our past and ongoing water issues, water conservation is of even more importance for the Perkins+Will building in Atlanta.
