We often read headlines on local and international news sites about things happening in our communities and our nation. Many times, we ask ourselves, “what can I do to impact change and use my voice to advocate for those around me?” To help you find the answer to your questions, you are cordially invited to join members of The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. (JLA) on February 16 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at our annual advocacy breakfast. Our theme, The State of Women, will lead us to examine the current environment in Georgia. This free event will take place at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church (3180 Peachtree Rd NE) and will include a panel featuring experts, including Elise Blasingame, Executive Director of Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies, Robert Sills, Political Consultant at Denton’s Helen Robinson, Policy Director for the YWCA of Greater Atlanta, and Ashlie Oliver, Georgia Women’s Policy Institute Fellow. The panel will discuss the current legislative session, the economic impact to women and children in Georgia and how you can be a part of the political process. Following the panel presentation, we will have roundtable discussions hosted by community leaders.

As the state legislature opens in Georgia, the opportunity to impact women’s issues should be at the forefront of each of our minds.  Pay raises for teachers, provisions for pregnant workers and pay transparency are just some of the issues coming to the State Capitol this legislative session. Our panelists are well versed on how to become involved in advocacy under the Gold Dome and will challenge attendees to help create positive systemic change.

For 102 years, JLA has been committed to changing the lives of the women and children by progressive action and coordinated impact. For decades we’ve used our voice and influence to have difficult conversations, and we want to encourage members of the Atlanta community to participate in those conversations with us. Our annual advocacy breakfast is the perfect opportunity to learn more about legislation, policy, and how citizens have the power to influence change in our state.
