The Georgia Historical Society unveiled a new historical marker honoring H. J. Russell & Company on April 29.
The recognition is part of the Georgia Business History Initiative, which highlights companies that have helped shape the state’s economy and history.
The marker was unveiled at the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs at 504 Fair Street in Atlanta. The building once served as the national headquarters of H. J. Russell & Company.
“Our father, Herman J. Russell, instilled the belief that true success is rooted in quality work and strong character, guiding the company’s early construction projects and real estate developments to reshape the city and create lasting value for clients and communities,” said H. Jerome Russell, president of H. J. Russell & Company. “As we celebrate this legacy, we look forward to a future built on perseverance, partnership, and meaningful impact, inspiring a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow for all.”
Herman J. Russell founded the company in 1952, growing it from a small plastering business into one of the nation’s largest Black-owned firms. Over the decades, H. J. Russell & Company became deeply connected to Atlanta’s growth, with its work reflected in major projects including Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Mercedes-Benz Stadium and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights.
Through the Georgia Business History Initiative, the historical society recognizes iconic companies and shares their stories with visitors.
“The Georgia Business History Initiative provides a platform for students of all ages to learn more about the impact and legacy of companies across our state,” said Dr. W. Todd Groce, President and CEO of the Georgia Historical Society. “It illustrates how local stories connect to the broader picture of American history and — as with H.J. Russell and Company — how hard work and a multi-generational commitment to innovation and quality can change the economic and cultural landscape of Atlanta.”
The marker commemorates H. J. Russell & Company’s contributions to Atlanta, Georgia and the nation.
Today, the Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs continues part of that legacy by supporting small business owners with resources, mentoring, access to an innovation lab and other tools to help them grow.
