This year, Atlanta Housing announced a historic expansion of its homeownership efforts by offering up to $60,000 in down payment assistance to eligible Housing Choice Voucher Program participants. These are families who are employed, financially prepared, and ready for homeownership. What many Atlantans need is support to meet rising housing costs, down payments, and closing expenses. Our investment reflects Atlanta Housing’s commitment to transforming readiness into opportunity.
The increased payment builds on Atlanta Housing’s existing $25,000 down payment assistance program available to aspiring homeowners across the city. During the past three years, Atlanta Housing has helped 769 first-time homebuyers access $17.1 million in direct assistance, alongside $13 million contributed by partners such as Invest Atlanta. Together, these investments have supported nearly $194 million in home purchases, creating pathways to stability, economic mobility, and generational wealth.
The impact of these programs can be seen in the lives of families who have successfully transitioned to homeownership. One example is Shavonne S., a City of Atlanta employee and former Atlanta Housing resident who recently achieved homeownership after participating in Atlanta Housing programs. She credits the housing voucher she received through Atlanta Housing with providing stability for her family and creating a foundation that enabled her to pursue long-term goals and ultimately purchase a home of her own.
Expanding access to homeownership requires strong partnerships. That is why Atlanta Housing is advancing a public-private partnership with Pretium, aligned with Mayor Andre Dickens’ vision that addressing Atlanta’s housing needs requires collective action. Through this partnership, eligible homes are being made available to Housing Choice Voucher families, along with seller support, targeted renovations, and a full year of post-purchase stability assistance. Increasing access to homeownership is only part of the solution. Long-term success also requires ensuring families have the resources and support necessary to thrive after purchase.
Research consistently shows that stable housing improves health outcomes, increases economic opportunity, strengthens neighborhoods, and enhances quality of life for children and families. For that reason, Atlanta Housing’s work extends beyond housing placement. Through a comprehensive network of wraparound services, residents receive support designed to help them achieve long-term success. These services include workforce development, job training, financial literacy, credit-building programs, homeownership education, and ongoing case management.
This approach is central to Atlanta Housing’s mission of helping families move through housing and toward greater opportunity.
When families transition from renting to owning, the benefits reach beyond individual households. Each successful transition creates opportunities for additional families seeking housing stability. Today, more than 20,000 families remain on Atlanta Housing’s waitlist, and many more are waiting for the opportunity to apply. Meeting Atlanta’s housing needs requires both expanding the housing supply and creating pathways that help families achieve greater economic independence.
