The Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change kicked off the annual King Holiday Observance roster with a Jan. 7 press conference announcing a lineup for “Mission Possible: Protecting Freedom, Justice and Democracy in the Spirit of Nonviolence365.”
Through Jan. 20, the King Center and its partners will host a series of events aimed at activating the core tenets of Martin Luther King Jr. to commemorate what would have been his 96th birthday. The annual remembrance takes on a different theme each year.
Martin Luther King Jr. Center CEO Dr. Bernice A. King said the “Mission Possible” theme came from a look at “robust challenges” across the world that play into poverty, inequality and militarism. The leader cited increasing political polarization, threats to democracy, homelessness and poverty, global conflicts “nearing genocidal levels” in places like the Gaza Strip and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and ongoing climate change.
King said violence worldwide and at home “signals a moral and spiritual void that reflects our inability to live together as brothers and sisters.” Yet, the King Center is steadfast in the hope that it can be repaired.
“My father and mother are testaments to the fact that it is possible to confront the problems in our world house and create a just, humane, equitable and peaceful world,” King said.
But she stressed change doesn’t come on its own. To bolster the King Center’s goals, the organization released its roster of events ranging from lesson plans to empowerment fairs.
The King Center will also host the Beloved Community Awards on Jan. 11, where individuals and organizations that embody King’s vision are recognized for their achievements. This year, the recipients include actress Jenifer Lewis, Nobel Peace Laureate Nadia Murad, philanthropist Laura Arnold, Morris Brown College, PSYONIC bionics, Black Voters Matter, Serenbe neighborhood, the Latino American Association and AIDS Healthcare Atlanta.
“I’m calling on us to do more than quote King, which we love to do,” Dr. King said.
In 2025, artificial intelligence and young people will dominate the MLK holiday lineup. Teachers will be able to participate in a “teach-in” on Jan. 17 with lesson plans that “empower students to become values-based changemakers.”
On Jan. 16, young people will be able to gather at Microsoft for the Beloved Community Global Youth Summit, where panels will tackle “artificial intelligence for social good.”
The all-ages global summit on Jan. 15 will also encourage students to join at a lower ticket cost. According to the center, it covers the intersections of AI, freedom, justice and democracy through the lens of Nonviolence365.
After the events are wrapped up, King Center partner Microsoft will also launch an AI-assisted podcast called ReThink. Young leaders will use the artificial intelligence assistant Microsoft Copilot to interpret Coretta Scott King’s work and legacy.
It’s a clear commitment to artificial intelligence as a way towards creating Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a beloved community.
Looking to the next year, Dr. Bernice A King wrapped up her remarks with a grim warning. Some of her father’s last writings said, “We still have a choice” between nonviolent coexistence and violent co-annihilation.
“We must choose Nonviolence365, or I’m afraid to say that we will end up collectively destroying ourselves,” King said.
