Metro Atlanta Chamber Launches Your Talent Your Future 3.0 Report on Georgia’s Talent Supply vs. Demand

The updated Your Talent Your Future (YTYF): A Look at Georgia’s Entry-level Talent Supply vs. Employer Demand report was unveiled this month by the Metro Atlanta Chamber (MAC). A morning event walked employers and educators through the data and the opportunities revealed.

Katie Kirkpatrick, chief policy officer at MAC, highlighted the importance of education and workforce development to the business community.

Robert Friess, managing director at Accenture, set the stage by discussing how the landscape has changed since the first version of the report. In 2016, when the first YTYF report was released, the job posting in Georgia had increased 154% over the previous five years and unemployment was 5.1%. Today, the job postings in Georgia have increased 28% and unemployment is down to 3.4%, and gaps in Georgia for specific degrees and certifications remain.

Since the release of the first report, some great strides have been made towards reducing the gap. Legislation has been passed, such as House Bill 218, extending HOPE eligibility from seven to 10 years, and Senate Bill 108, creating computer science education standards in K-12 as well as support for professional development for computer science educators. Other progress has included programs like the University System of Georgia’s new Nexus degree with experiential learning co-designed with industry leaders to fill high-demand occupations.

Amy Lancaster-King, director of workforce development for MAC, revealed the major findings of the report, with data broken down into four categories: Demand Overview, Supply Overview, Talent Gaps and Closing the Gap.

A few highlights below:

  • The industries in highest demand are Health Care and Social Assistance, Retail Trade, Professional, Scientific and Technical Services, and Manufacturing.
  • Construction is the fastest-growing industry, with job postings increasing 70% from 2014-2018.
  • Education and experience requirements in job postings are increasing.
  • Entry-level demand is highest in registered nurses and licensed practical and vocational nurses.
  • There is a large over supply in associate degrees in liberal arts & sciences and in bachelor’s degrees in psychology and social sciences.
