The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) celebrated Get on Board Day last Thursday with a free lunchtime yoga session and mini health and wellness fair at Five Points Station.
For the event, the station’s soccer field was turned into a yoga studio where around 20 people flexed and stretched on a comfortable, overcast spring day. Others browsed the health and wellness fair, enjoyed a free massage, and grabbed a popsicle from King of Pops.
Get on Board Day is the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) new advocacy campaign to increase support of public transit. MARTA took this opportunity to feature the health benefits of taking transit with interactive exhibits from Relay Bikes, Georgia Commute Options, and Grady.
“MARTA is committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle,” said MARTA General Manager & CEO Jeffrey Parker. “Fresh MARTA Markets provide locally-sourced produce to communities. The popular Station Soccer program encourages physical fitness, and MARTA’s fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses reduces emissions.”
The Fresh MARTA Markets are open Tuesdays at West End, Wednesdays at Bankhead and H.E. Holmes, Thursdays at College Park, and Fridays at Five Points from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. MARTA, along with managing partners Community Farmers Markets, Organix Matters, and Food Oasis Atlanta will provide fresh produce once a week from now through the first week of December. The markets are supported by the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Open Hand, and Wholesome Wave Georgia.
The markets accept cash, credit, debit, and Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT)/Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP is doubled at the market, meaning $5 swiped is $10 to spend.
