Advocacy In Action

By: Melissa Redmon, Public & Political Affairs Committee Chair, Junior League of Atlanta

The Junior League of Atlanta Inc.’s Political and Public Affairs Committee (PAC) is tasked with keeping our membership informed on issues affecting our community impact focus areas of Commercial Sexual Exploitation/Human Trafficking, Early Childhood Education, and Generational Poverty; while also encouraging our members to advocate for policies that improve the lives of women and children.

As we enthusiastically begin the 2018-19 league year, PAC is galvanized by the success of last year’s events: During the last league year, we partnered with Georgia Early Education Alliance (GEEARS) and the United Way of Greater Atlanta to host a Mayoral Forum on Supporting Atlanta’s Families.  In February, our members gathered at the the state Capitol for our annual Capitol Day.  On Capitol Day, our members shared our legislative priorities directly with our state legislators, and we also heard from several of our female legislators who shared their journeys to the Gold Dome and encouraged members to make their voices heard.

Throughout the legislative session, the PAC followed several important pieces of legislation including HB 834, which provides for the early lease termination for domestic abuse survivors; HB 273 addressing mandatory recess; and HB 159 which was this year’s adoption bill.  We were thrilled to see HB 834 and HB 159 signed into law.

As the 2018 election season ramps up, the Junior League of Atlanta will be ensuring our members have all the information they need before heading to the ballot box.  In the fall, we will partner to host voter education opportunities that will allow our members to engage directly with candidates running for elected office.  Throughout the fall, we will be sending out information about voter registration deadlines and early voting dates. Providing this information and opportunities to hear candidates for key races first-hand empowers our members to be advocates in the most important way- by being an educated voter.

We look forward to another impactful year, advocating for the needs of our city and the state. Join us as we work to transform communities through advocacy.
