A Tuesday work session of the Fulton County School Board is expected to be packed with parents and elected officials who object to the permanent closure of two elementary schools.

Board members will discuss staff recommendations to permanently close the two elementary schools located in Sandy Springs and East Point.
The meeting will take place at 4 p.m. at the North Learning Center, 450 Northridge Parkway, Sandy Springs.

Mayor Sandy Springs Rusty Paul and East Point Deana Holiday Ingraham have said they are against closing the elementary schools.

Parents of students attending both schools have voiced objections publicly, including during community meetings, regarding Fulton School’s redistricting plan.

In East Point, the school district plans to open a new building for Conley Hills Elementary in August.

A redistricting plan and the closure of Parklane would allow for the use of the new building.

The redistricting would impact students currently at Parklane, Asa G. Hilliard Elementary, Hapeville Elementary, Conley Hills Elementary and Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary.

Fulton officials have said that both Parklane and Spalding Drive schools have aging buildings that no longer serve students sufficiently.
Spalding Drive Elementary parents say that the school district has been ignoring nearly $2 million in building improvements for the Sandy Springs school since 2019.

The Save Spalding Drive Elementary School Committee of parents has asked Fulton County Schools to delay plans for closure until at least 2030. The Sandy Springs redistricting would impact current Spalding Drive Elementary students, Woodland Elementary, Heards Ferry Elementary, and Ison Springs Elementary.
