Georgia officials will welcome the Queen Consort of Warri, Nigeria in March.

State Rep. Kim Schofield has asked College Park to host a dinner honoring Olori Atuwatse III on March 11 at the Georgia International Convention Center.

Schofield made the request during the public comment period at the College Park City Council meeting on Monday night.

The queen consort is the wife of Ogiame Atuwatse III, king and ruler of the Warri Kingdom. She will be visiting the region March 9-12, said Schofield, who wants the city to donate the dinner and use of the convention center as an in-kind donation.

“It’s a diplomatic opportunity,” said Schofield. “It offers us a platform to showcase College Park as a hub for global engagement, hospitality and cultural exchange.”

Schofield said officials such as U.S. Rep. David Scott, U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams, U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock and U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, as well as other metro area officials, business leaders and consulate generals will be invited to the event.

Schofield said that College Park hosting the event will show the city’s commitment to fostering relationships across the state and internationally.

“This is a chance to elevate College Park’s profile, strengthen diplomatic ties and create opportunities for economic and cultural growth,” the state representative said.

Following the public comment, Councilman Roderick Gay asked Schofield to provide details to Yanous Barner, the convention center’s interim executive director.

  1. Why? The king of Warri is a Multi Millionaire and his wife’s family are Billionaires.
Why put College Park on the economic Map with Warri?!
The hardworking tax payers of College Park do not need their hard earned money spent on this! This is typical Government waste. Lets hope this is about to change!
