Atlanta’s election season is officially over. After voters turned out for Atlanta City Council elections and school board races across the city on Nov. 4, several races got pushed to runoff elections.

Here are the results from the Dec. 2 runoff elections in Atlanta.

District 7

MARTA Board of Directors member Thomas Worthy beat out public affairs specialist Thad Flowers for the Atlanta City Council District 7 seat yesterday, with 59 percent of the vote.

The district covers part of Buckhead, including North Buckhead, Buckhead Forest, Garden Hills and Peachtree Heights East. It opened up for a competitive race when longtime Councilmember Howard Shook announced his retirement.

Worthy is also the chief public policy officer for Piedmont Healthcare. He has served on a lengthy roster of nonprofit boards, and ran on a platform of improved infrastructure, lower taxes and public safety investment.

He was backed by many members of the political establishment, including Mayor Andre Dickens.

District 11

Wayne Martin won the Atlanta City Council District 11 seat, beating out real estate attorney Nate Jester for the role previously held by Marci Collier Overstreet. She won her race for Atlanta City Council President in November.

As councilmember, Martin will lead District 11, which covers southwest neighborhoods including Cascade Road, Campbellton Road, Ben Hill and Princeton Lakes.

Martin has a local government background. He served as the Community and Civic Outreach Coordinator for Atlanta City Council Post 1 At-Large and later worked for the Atlanta Housing Authority. He also worked in government affairs for several major companies, like Starbucks and Comcast Cable.

He received heavy support from the political establishment, including the mayor. Martin campaigned on improved relationships with public safety officers, more affordable housing, expanded transit, food access and resources for seniors.

Atlanta Board of Education District 2

Tony Mitchell beat out opponent Marlissa Crawford with a hefty 73 percent of the vote in yesterday’s runoff election. Mitchell, a policy advocate and lobbyist, will lead District 2 of the city school board covering Buckhead, Atlantic Station, Home Park, English Avenue, Vine City, South Downtown, Mechanicsville, the West End, Oakland City and the Atlanta University Center.

He ran on improving chronic absenteeism and addressing literacy rates and the impacts of poverty on education.

Atlanta Board of Education District 6

Challenger Patreece Hutcherson beat out incumbent Tolton Pace for the District 6 seat, which covers several southwest neighborhoods including Cascade Road, Campbellton Road, Ben Hill, Greenbriar, Adair Park, Pittsburgh, Capitol View and Sylvan Hills.

Hutcherson is a career school counselor. This is her third time running for school board and first time winning a race – she aims to “figure out” the budget and improve facilities and stability in underinvested south side neighborhoods.

Atlanta Board of Education District 8 At-Large

Kaycee Brock will hold the citywide school board seat after edging out her opponent, Royce Mann in yesterday’s runoff election with 52 percent of the vote.

Brock has served in multiple teaching and education roles as a postsecondary pathways and staff culture consultant. She beat out Mann, a political organizer and recent Emory University graduate.

Like other board members elected yesterday, Brock wants to reduce chronic absenteeism and stabilize the budget. She also ran on improving instruction and school culture.
