Marcia Prewitt Spiller, headmaster of the Children’s School for more than two decades, has been named as the Woodward Academy’s vice president and dean for academic affairs beginning July 1.
Spiller will succeed Ron McCollum, Woodward’s vice president and headmaster, who is retiring after 33 years at Woodward Academy, which is located in College Park.
In addition to leading the Children’s School, Spiller is chair of the National Association of Independent Schools, a position she’s held for the last three years. By chairing the organization’s 22-member board, Spiller has developed meaningful relationships with educational experts nationally and internationally that she will be able to tap into in her new role, according to Woodward officials.
Spiller was raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She attended Fisk University, where she earned a B.A. in Elementary Education. She received a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Georgia State University.
Prior to joining the Children’s School, Spiller served in teaching and administrative capacities in public and independent schools in Ohio and Atlanta. Spiller has been very active in the Atlanta community, serving on the boards of the Boys & Girls Clubs and Hands on Atlanta. Spiller also is a 1993 graduate of Leadership Atlanta.
Spiller’s connection with the Children’s School began in 1986 when she enrolled her two children in the school that’s located on Tenth Street in Midtown. She went on the board of the school in 1988, and then in 1989, she was named acting assistant head of school. She became headmaster in 1990.
Spiller’s selection was the result of a national search, spanning six months, which yielded more than 100 expressions of interest in the position.
