Numerous Memorial Day events will take place this holiday weekend to honor the men and women who died while serving the United States. Here are six observances taking place around the metro area.
Oakland Cemetery
Oakland Cemetery will host a veterans tour at 11 a.m. Sunday. Visitors will learn about veterans from the Mexican-American War, which began in 1846, through the Korean War years beginning in 1950. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to check in at the Oakland Store inside the Visitor Center, 374 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SE.
Roswell
Roswell’s 27th Annual Roswell Remembers Memorial Day Ceremony begins at 10 a.m. Monday at Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill St. The event includes a military ceremony, music by Roswell New Horizons Band, a tribute to prisoners of war and those missing in action, the laying of a wreath and more. Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Cary S. King is the guest speaker. A barbecue lunch will follow.
Alpharetta
The city of Alpharetta and the Rotary Club of Alpharetta will host a Memorial Day event at 9:15 a.m. Monday at Alpharetta City Hall, 2 Park Plaza. The program includes patriotic music and a keynote address by retired U.S. Army veteran Tommy Clark. The city will also introduce Patriotic Pathway, a self-guided walking trail through downtown with 13 stops representing the original 13 colonies and local history.
Stone Mountain
Stone Mountain Park continues its Drone & Light Show honoring the 250th anniversary of the United States. The show includes a salute to the troops, synchronized flames, sparks, motion and a fireworks finale, a statement said. The show runs nightly through May 31 and begins at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are available on the park’s website. The park is located at 1000 Robert E. Lee Blvd.
Dunwoody
Dunwoody will hold its Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Memorial in Brook Run Park, 4770 N. Peachtree Road. City Council Member Catherine Lautenbacher, who served in the U.S. Air Force as an intelligence officer, will deliver the keynote address. The Georgia State Defense Force Band will perform patriotic music, and the program will include remarks from Mayor Lynn Deutsch, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Councilman Joe Seconder, and a moment of silence led by Police Chief Mike Carlson.
Marietta
The National Memorial Day Association of Georgia will host a ceremony at noon on Monday at Marietta National Cemetery, 500 Washington Ave. NE. The event includes a presentation of colors, patriotic music, a gun salute and guest speakers.
