Family members of Martin Luther King Jr. honored the 57th anniversary of the civil rights pioneer’s assassination at an April 4 wreath laying at the King Center.

Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter and CEO of the King Center Reverend Dr. Bernice A King delivered remarks to a small crowd in front of her parents’ shared grave. She said the annual ceremony is a moment to reflect not on her father’s death, but on his “extraordinary work.”

“We gather in a peculiar time in the making of history,” King said. “I just want to say to everybody that when you think of the life and the legacy and the work of Dr. King, remember that he was a man of hope.”

The King Center CEO encouraged love that “pulls people in and exposes injustice.” After her remarks, she introduced the other King family members. MLK Jr.’s niece and A.D. King’s daughter Alveda King led the crowd in song. Her brother Dr. Derek King then led the group in prayer.
