Georgia renters must earn nearly three times the minimum wage in order to afford a typical two-bedroom home without spending more than 30 percent of their income. In metro Atlanta and the city itself, it could take almost five times the state’s $7.25-an-hour wage to do the same.
In order to rent a standard two-bedroom in Georgia, workers must earn $19.42 an hour, far more than the state’s minimum wage — the lowest in the country — according to a new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

The state of Georgia and the City of Atlanta ought to be ashamed of this article. Pricing the poor out of the city. Politicians don’t really care for the working man. They tell you to vote for them and they change nothing. That’s for the state level and federal level. During this pandemic this the most the federal government has ever done for the people. Its so sad. We the people are not on our ELECTED officials agenda. Their to busy arguing about things that don’t matter to the middle class and poor.
The influx of people from higher earning states are a huge part of the problem. As Atlanta grows its high earner population, rents necessarily go up.
Rather than merely focusing on minimum wage, we need to address the state and city’s habit of offering sweetheart deals to employers to move operations here. If we can’t do that, then Atlanta will continue its transformation into the San Francisco of the south (in terms of cost of living) and all of us who lived here prior to the new arrivals will be forcible migrated out of the city we love.
Companies that move here should not expect to avoid taxes. Contrary to what the newcomers think, we were managing pretty well without Amazon, Microsoft, et al.
Yes, the minimum wage needs to rise but it’s never going to keep up with rapid growth of yuppies. The big problem is our leadership pimping out our city

The minimum wage should really go up in Georgia
During the pandemic We went to a one house hold income, and my property manager refused to accept my rent because it was not the full payment by the 3rd of the month, I fell behind almost getting evicted , thank God for the eviction protection, the housing rate has spiked running $1600 – $2000 on a average rate and these properties wants you to make 3 time the rent some 4 times the rent this is unfair no makes that unless you working 2-3 jobs or you have a job making $2000 a week
We need change in the housing market we will have people out on the streets focus on what’s important instead of worrying if someone has been vaccinated…
And people think that Brain Kemp has done a good job being governor for the state of Georgia??? Brian Kemp looks out for the rich, upper class business owners and not the poor. He sits in the government seat just to continue to secure slave labor wages for the poor working class just to continue to ensure the future wealth of the upper class while he maintains poverty. I don’t understand why he keeps getting reelected. Surely the majority can not be pleased with him. And they have the nerve to accuse the Democrats of rigging votes andcheating the election. Sure!

In the past year housing prices and apartment condo rent has doubled in all counties from middle Georgia to north Georgia. Some houses in middle Georgia won’t even pass an FHA home inspection but are priced like well maintained houses. For example I discovered an old converted single wide mobile home with no county water near Milledgeville with a rental cost of $1100.00 per month. I remember ten years ago you could buy a four bedroom two story brick house with a basement attic and two car garage with a fenced back yard in Tucker Georgia for $850.00 per month. Today a one bedroom apartment anywhere in north Georgia starts at $850.00 per month. Georgia has caught up with California.
As a Black home remodeling contractor in Atlanta I understand the issue with hahaving to live off minimum wage. But what I can’t understand is how I can put ads on Craigslist for 90 days for a handyman and Painter which pays a lot more than minimum wage and only 4 people responded for work.
