Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary has announced the passing of Baloo, the cherished American black bear known as the last member of the sanctuary’s iconic “BLT” trio. Baloo was humanely euthanized following a decline in mobility and quality of life despite weeks of treatment and observation.

At 23 years old, Baloo had long battled arthritis but remained active until this spring, when a misstep worsened his condition. Despite medication adjustments and expert consultations, including with the University of Georgia, treatment options proved limited due to his size. A necropsy will be conducted to help determine the cause of his decline.

Baloo arrived at Noah’s Ark as a cub rescued from a drug dealer alongside a lion and tiger. His gentle nature and resilience made him a favorite among visitors and staff alike. His ashes will be returned to the sanctuary.

Norfolk Southern announces Trades on the Track scholarship fund

Norfolk Southern has introduced the Trades on Track scholarship, offering $5,000 in financial aid to vocational students across its 22-state network. Funds can be used for tuition, tools, computer equipment and other training-related costs.

As vocational school enrollment sees double-digit growth, the scholarship supports growing demand for skilled rail workers, from welders to engineers. Norfolk Southern is already investing heavily in trade education, operating the state’s first AWS-accredited welding facility and pioneering AI-powered training through virtual reality.

Administered by the Atlanta-based SkillPointe Foundation, the program is open to new, current or career-changing students pursuing skilled trades. Applications are due by Sept. 30.

“Trades are vital to building the railroad of the future,” said Kristin Wong of Norfolk Southern. Alvin Townley of SkillPointe added: “This partnership expands access to high-demand career paths in rail.”

The Carter Center launches mental health awareness campaign in Atlanta

The Carter Center, with support from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, has launched a new public awareness campaign across metro Atlanta to encourage women — particularly those less likely to seek care — to access mental health treatment.

The campaign educates residents about Georgia’s 2022 Mental Health Parity Act, which requires insurance plans to cover mental health care at the same level as physical health. Despite the law, many remain unaware of these protections, especially Black women, who research shows face disproportionate barriers to mental health access.

Running through mid-July, the campaign features ads across streaming platforms, billboards, pharmacies, doctor’s offices and local media. Created with input from Atlanta leaders and the Georgia Parity Collaborative, the initiative honors Rosalynn Carter’s legacy of advancing mental health access and reducing stigma.
