I remember meeting a 100-year-old woman in the aisle of a grocery store here in Atlanta back in 2016. She was interested in what I was buying as she “liked to try new things,” but I was more interested in her, as she casually mentioned she had just celebrated her 100th birthday. I asked what her secret to longevity was, and she replied with a smile, “Grow up in the country and have parents who love one another.”

Now, as I reminisce about our conversation, I can only think that her theory proves true as Plains, Ga., native and almost-centenarian President Jimmy Carter celebrates his 100th birthday.

If there are two things both political parties can agree on, it’s that 1) turning 100 years old is no small feat, and 2) Jimmy Carter has left a legacy like no other. As Jimmy Carter’s October 1st birthday approaches, mesmerizing stories have begun to emerge of how he spent his time outside of the White House.

Jimmy Carter liked being outdoors and paddling rivers. He also enjoyed listening to good music and sharing a dance with his love, Rosalynn Carter. And although it is fascinating to think about Jimmy Carter gliding through class V rapids on the Chattooga River and his environmental commitment to GA waterways, perhaps the most interesting part of this ‘Jim’ of all trade’s legacy is that he organically became friends with so many rock, folk, jazz and gospel musicians.

In the 2020 documentary, “Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President,” lead producer, Chris Farrell unravels decades of memories of Jimmy Carter and his longtime friendships with the Allman Brothers, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and many other legendary singers and songwriters. Sharing the stage with iconic performers at Fox Theatre several times during his campaign run in the 70s, Jimmy Carter was known for always including the powerful and tethering force of music throughout his presidency.

Old friends of Carter’s, some of them famous legends, and others longtime friends from his hometown church, share their admiration of his love of music in the documentary. One recalls that he attended the Black church regularly and truly proved his knack for singing gospel by not even having to pick up the hymn book because he already knew all of the songs.

Bob Dylan shares that it was when he was invited to the governor’s mansion that he gained his utmost respect for Carter, who was a poet himself, as he recognized his sincere appreciation for the songs Dylan had written. As he looks back on his long friendship with Carter, he coins him a “simple kind of man…just like the Lynyrd Skynyrd song.” The Allman Brothers added in a story of them finishing a bottle of J&B scotch with a barefoot, no-shirt Carter on his front porch. Bono jokes that if Carter’s hair had been just a bit longer, he would have been in the Allman Brothers himself.

In another interview featured in the film, Chip Carter, Jimmy’s son, shares that growing up in Plains, Ga., would have felt very secluded had it not been for their home radio, which he recalls as his “only other contact to the outside world.”

“When we had no money at all, Dad spent $600 on the best stereo in Plains, Ga.,” he added.

Carter’s knowledgeable and genuine grasp on music helped him connect with the younger demographic of voters at that time. The late, great, Jimmy Buffett even joined his campaign trail in Oregon. He notes in his interview that Carter was trying to raise a generation with someone who was ‘hip enough to get it’.

During the hostage crisis in Iran, Carter recalls retreating to his private study at the White House to listen to Willie Nelson’s gospel album. “I would listen to that album and would think about my options and pray”, he shares.

As Fox Theatre now prepares to host a star-studded evening in honor of Jimmy Carter’s 100th year around the sun, it is truly a full circle moment that so many of his friends and family can agree is the perfect celebration. Presented by Delta, ‘Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song’ at Fox Theatre will take place on Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and will feature performers including Chuck Leavell, D-Nice, Drive-By Truckers, Eric Church, GROUPLOVE, Maren Morris,  The War And Treaty, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus — with more artists being added weekly.

Appearances from famous friends are expected, and dignitaries who love Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter and the organization they founded more than 40 years ago: The Carter Center. As President Carter once said, “Music is the best proof that people have one thing in common no matter where they live, no matter what language they speak.”

Tickets are $100 — in honor of Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday — and are available here. Proceeds from the event will support The Carter Center, continuing Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s work to promote peace and improve health around the world.

  1. Jimmy & his friends took some poor kids from the projects skiing when he was governor. Wonder if any of those children could be contacted to see if they have “survived,” & what it meant to them

    1. I have always been a huge fan of President Carter. I admire him so much for all the work and kindness he has spread. I also admire how much he loved his wife. I wish there were more people in power like him.

  2. Dear President Carter, You were 30 when I was born. I remember your presidency. I was in college. My mom had just passed away. The 70s. I remember how hard you worked as president and your sincerity. Thank you for Habitat for Humanity. I am sure many people continue to benefit. I love the Restore. You will always be one of the Greatest Presidents. I know if you had your say now, the YMCA would still exist EVERYWHERE. The YMCA childcare helped me as a single mom when I first became a teacher in Pomona, Calif. You were good for the country. We need more human beings like you. I also know you know about the existence of ETs. You know they are respectful of us, they have a much higher IQ, and they have kept us from blowing up ourselves with nuclear weapons. Dr. Steven Greer has picked up where you were stopped on ETs. God bless you and us. We have nothing to fear but our own military industrial complex.

        1. You must be a Fascist, right wing zealot in Trump fashion. Jimmy Carter is the most maligned president in history, thanks to Reagan stealing his accomplishment in the return of the hostages. “SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on you…”

  3. I was on President Carter’s Commission on Mental Health. His example has been the inspiration for my work with indigenous Alaskans and for our nature preserve in the mountains of Tennessee.

  7. Dear Mr. President Carter, I have been fascinated with you since the age of 13 when you became president. Not only because we share our birthdays, October 1st. But also because you are simply a great human being. I really believe that the presidency was not good enough for you. You also found your Niche by serving the entire world. The entire world owes you gratitude. I was so pleased to take pictures with you and your wife in 2008 at the Maranatha Church in Plains. You have my deepest condolences for the loss of the love of your life, Rosalyn Carter. She was and is a most inspirational wife, mother and woman in her own right. A special friend bought me a ticket to the gala that is being held in your honor on September 17th. I am even getting a fascinating dress made for the occasion. It is the same dress that Michelle Obama wore as she and her husband walked down Pennsylvania Avenue to the inauguration. Hopefully I will get to see you at the concert on September 17th. Until then take care of yourself and May the father, the son and the Holy Spirit bless you always. Hardie M. Garnett

    1. October 1 is my birthday, too. I’ve always admired President Carter and not because of that. 2 years ago, I received a birthday card from the Carter Center.

  8. I am from Kenya, but has been a great fan of Jimmy Carter from the 1976 campaigns to date. I confess I may not have the required English sentences to describe some of his accomplishments but I want to say how disappointed I was when Colonel Beckwith led rescue mission failed to finish the job because of the accident in the desert in Iran. On a lighter note his hairstyle change during his campaign for reelection in 1980 still amazingly comes back to my memory. May I wish the great man of Plains, Georgia a happy 100th birthday.

  9. President Carter and his late wife Roselyn you both enhanced the nation and the office of President and First Lady .happy birthday Mr President and hope you reach your century you will both be remembered long after others who occupied the office have gone.your dignity and public service shine like a beacon of hope

  10. My husband and I got to see you and Roselyn in action for a whole week in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. The honor that we felt to be there alongside of you was one of the greatest memories of our lives. As Chuck Colson so aptly put it on the final night at 4th Presbyterian church, “Jimmy Carter lived his life as Jesus did, giving up his power to serve rather than to use it to further his own agenda..”. Jimmy, happy happy birthday to the most incredible President ever. And what an impression Roslyn left in my memory and heart. You are a national and worldwide treasure. And so was she. And the memories are sweet. God bless you greatly on your 100th birthday.

  13. When I walked across the stage at North Georgia College’s Memorial Hall in May of 1971, the person who shook my hand and handed me my college diploma was none other than ‘Govenor’ Jimmy Carter, who had just delivered our commencement address.
But our governor would have far bigger things in store for his future just a few years later, and we all would watch him ascend to much loftier and greater heights.
    Happy 100th.

  14. Happy, happy birthday President Carter:
God has blessed you to experience life 100 years. . I love you and think of a president with no negative things associated with your name . You have lived a Christian life prior to being President, being President , and after out of office, and the death of your wife that you and the country loved so much. You are God’s servant being Good and faithful servant. that out of officiant your wife and after the death of your life established Habitat you helped people that needed housing by the two of you working for housing for people that could not afford housing the two you established Habits. The purpose was for people that could not afford purchasing a home, it was done through Habit. The two of you seen the need and supplied the building of homes for people and it still going on because of the two of you. You”ll went out and help build the homes, what a blessing the two of you have been to the people of this country. I support Habitat by purchasing things from them knowing that the funds are going to build homes for people that can’t purchase on their own.
My church support Habit by volunteers participating in building some homes. items and my church have a ministry where members go and volunteers
We need more people, Presiden, Churches, etc to give to others and be a blessing to others or the Bible says the “less of them”.
I prayer for you and your family for the loss of your wife and best friend in life. At 23, I loss my husband from cancer diabetes but with the help from The Lord and my parents they helped me, so I know what you are going through.
I your name I will continue to support Habits because it is for a good cause and it helps the persons that purchase things there at the same time.
Love you and praying for you and your family.

  15. It was my honor and privilege to have served as the historian on the planning team for the National Park Service’s Jimmy Carter National Historic Site in Plains, Georgia. President and Mrs. Carter were most gracious and helpful throughout the planning process. This project was one of the most important efforts of my thirty year career with the National Park Service. It was an honor to have been able to contribute to this important NPS project. I am now living in Tucson, Arizona.

    1. He’s the commie bastard that started all this new world order bullshit. They way he handled the Iran hostages in the 70s was the actions of a coward made the world start laughing at the United States

  16. I feel privleged and honored to have lived in a world that had Jimmy Carter in it. My first vote for president in 1980 was for you and I feel it was my most important vote of my life yet today. I have been in your presence 4 times starting with your speech in Iowa City, Iowa and ending in your church sitting behind your beautiful wife while listening to your teaching of the day. To my most admired human being, happy 100th. Words cannot describe what you have given our country and mankind.

  17. Who let you in on this conversation, “Van Brashear”. Why don’t you get your rear with your MAGA, wife cheaters and child abusers. This conversation is only for Loving Respectful Christians and YES, Democrats.

  18. I was a Carter delegate in 1980. Was invited to the White House. It was a high honor and total thrill to meet the Carters. The GOP stacked the deck with the Hostage Crisis. Nonetheless President Carter served with dignity. In his post Presidency, he has devoted himself to peace and the poor. Did not enrich himself or seek the spotlight. God bless this gentleman…and gentle man!!

  19. Salute to you Mr President Carter . Myself and the people of Guyana wish you could live a next 100 yrs because of you heading the observer team in bringing Guyana rigged elections to an end in the year 1992. Thank you so much and may peace be on to you forever, now and in eternity. God bless
