According to a recent report from national real estate data provider Attom Data Solutions LLC, Atlanta experienced one of the highest spikes in property taxes in the country last year. Property taxes for single-family homes in metro Atlanta increased by an average of 15.2% from 2022 to 2023. Metro Atlanta had the fifth-largest year-over-year average tax increase in the country among metro areas with populations of more than one million.

As the Atlanta BeltLine continues to transform the city’s urban landscape, increasing greenspace and trail connectivity, the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership (ABP) is taking significant steps to ensure that homeowners in the vicinity do not overpay on their property taxes. The Partnership’s initiatives are a beacon of hope for residents who fear displacement due to rising property values and taxes.

A Proactive Approach

The Partnership holds a strong commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of Atlanta’s neighborhoods and the people living within them. The approach extends beyond financial assistance, which is available for eligible residents through the Legacy Resident Retention Program. It includes educating homeowners about available tools as well as sharing how to navigate the complexities of property taxes.

As the date for homeowners to receive their property tax assessments draws near, the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership offers help for those who feel the statements they receive in the mail are inaccurate or unfair. Along with a detailed information session and step-by-step video instruction, residents can sign up for one-on-one guidance to navigate the appeals process.

Make an Impact

The impact of these efforts is profound. Homeowners express immense gratitude for the program, highlighting how it has allowed them to plan for retirement and build generational wealth without the looming threat of displacement. These initiatives reflect a deep understanding of the community’s needs and a strong commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of Atlanta’s neighborhoods.

By investing in these empowerment workshops, corporations are contributing to creating a more equitable, inclusive, and resilient city, where progress and preservation go hand in hand. This year, Home Empowerment programs are powered by Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Wells Fargo. Also joining the work to advance resident support are Delta Air Lines Foundation, Georgia Power, Kaiser Permanente, PNC Foundation, and SouthState Bank.

There are multiple ways Individuals and companies can help address homeowner challenges:

  • Support: Provide the essential financial resources that enable the workshops to take place. This allows the Partnership to offer these programs free of charge, making them accessible to all residents, regardless of their economic situation.
  • Spread the Word: Inform your neighbors about the resources and assistance programs available through the Partnership. Many residents might not be aware of the help they can receive.
  • Volunteer: Take time to help a neighbor through the process. Expert training is available for all who lend a hand. Your involvement can make a difference in someone’s ability to stay in their home.
  • Advocate: Join in to advocate for policies that support affordable housing and protect against displacement. Contact your local representatives and voice your support for these initiatives.
