Taking Stock of Metro Atlanta’s Affordable Housing Priorities
For more than five years, statistics make clear the depth of the housing affordability crisis in our region– historically low housing stock; soaring housing costs for renters and homeowners; increasing numbers of cost-burdened residents; a global pandemic leading to supply chain shortages, among many other challenges.
In 2018, pre-pandemic housing affordability barriers prompted an 18-month examination and corresponding recommendations from HouseATL, a cross-sector collaborative of Atlantans focused on housing solutions. These recommendations served as a guidepost for the 2019 publication of the One Atlanta Housing Affordability Action Plan led by former mayor Keisha Bottoms.
Some five years later, what has been accomplished to increase access to housing in the City of Atlanta? How many affordable homes were produced or preserved? Atlantans elected Mayor Andre Dickens, one of the strongest advocates for affordable housing during his two-term city council tenure. What will his election mean for the City’s housing priorities?
Additionally, several jurisdictions and civic groups in the metro are also increasing their focus on housing affordability. Will housing affordability become a region-wide focus in 2022? What do past and current housing market trends tell us about the year ahead?
Join Housing Forum founder and moderator Bill Bolling Wednesday, March 2, as the Forum takes stock of metro Atlanta’s housing priorities for 2022 and the years ahead. Our conversations will include city and county leaders at the helm of housing initiatives; we’ll hear from the architects of the HouseATL recommendations, and Atlanta Regional Commission will give us a glimpse of the recent past and road ahead for housing affordability.
