As communities around the world react in the face of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the Metro Atlanta Chamber (MAC) is monitoring discussion from around the region and continually updating a master compilation of resources from the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Georgia Department of Public Health, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the U.S. Small Business Administration, the Georgia Municipal Association, the Georgia Center for Nonprofits, the Georgia Department of Education and more to come. The Chamber is continually monitoring the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) outbreak and its effect on metro Atlanta. MAC has developed a policy regarding COVID-19 that reflects practices that have emerged from CDC recommendations and across the business community. Our top priority is the safety of our staff, investors and visitors. We are committed to maintaining business continuity, and we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that we remain productive and responsive throughout this situation. Additionally, Chamber President and CEO Hala Moddelmog released the following statement on March 19, 2020, in light of recent developments:

“Like others in metro Atlanta and around the world, we are following the rapidly evolving news related to COVID-19 closely. We are committed to doing our part to flatten the curve and help our business community and our neighbors as we all work through this together. 

Earlier today, more than 270 of our board members, CEOs and community leaders convened virtually to discuss COVID-19 and our region’s response. Even in the midst of this ever-changing environment, one thing was clear: metro Atlanta’s business community is playing a critical role as we face this unprecedented pandemic. We are actively asking employees and others to adhere to guidance from federal, state and local authorities and making necessary adjustments in our organizations in response to current challenges and in preparation for the days ahead. 

Our staff is working virtually, and we have transitioned to virtual programming. More broadly, we know that it will be many months from now before we can reliably analyze the impact on our business community and Atlanta’s economy. 

In tough times, we are reminded of our region’s rich history. We are a community known for weathering storms and rising — even in the face of adversity. We have the advantage of a diverse business ecosystem and a strong sense of community. We come together to collaborate, activate and yield collective impact, especially in times of need. And we are seeing this in our response to COVID-19 from the governor to local mayors, civic organizations and the wide range of leaders who are working together to share best practices, find solutions and make philanthropic contributions as new challenges arise. 

We are thankful for the countless Atlantans and Georgians who are working together to guide us through these uncertain times, support our neighbors and help us get to the other side as a stronger community, region and state.”
