By: Tameeka Law Walker, MD, Director of Capacity Building, The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc.

The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. (JLA) values collaboration and believes in maximizing community impact through effective external partnerships and internal relations to attain our shared mission of enhancing the lives for women and children in the Atlanta community. To this end, JLA offers free Capacity Building training throughout the year to the public and nonprofit agencies so that they might enhance their ability to have a positive impact on the city of Atlanta. The trainings are based on identified needs of community organizations in the JLA network of partners, with a majority focusing on the well-being of women and children.

Our 2018-2019 league year began with an informative presentation on how major changes in tax laws affect charitable giving. Christy Eckoff, JD of The Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta discussed how the new tax laws could impact nonprofits work, how to answer common questions from donors and shared tactics to help donors maximize their tax benefits with the changes. Past topics of Capacity Building training sessions have included fundraising, social enterprise, volunteer management, marketing and strategic partnerships presented by an array of diverse speakers from Coxe Curry, United Way of Greater Atlanta, the Department of Family and Child Services, the Boys and Girls Club and the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

The monthly Capacity Building breakfast sessions provide a space for networking, civic engagement and professional development for nonprofit agency staff and board members. Upcoming session topics include: Impacts and Measurements, Board Training and Development, Organizational Emergency Preparedness along with Fund Strategy and Diversification.

While direct community service remains at the heart of JLA’s work, our Capacity Building trainings are another important way our members are able to positively impact and empower the community.

All Metro Atlanta nonprofit agency staff and board members can learn more about upcoming free Capacity Building training opportunities by visiting the events section of jlatlanta.org.
