Tax season can be especially stressful for low-income earners. Unfortunately, filing taxes can seem like a roadblock when it should be an avenue for extra cash. In partnership with the IRS, United Way of Greater Atlanta is ensuring that Georgia residents who make less than $60,000 a year can both file their taxes for free and receive their maximum tax refund.

Over 30 VITA sites throughout metro Atlanta are equipped with IRS-certified tax preparers who are trained to aid filers every step of the way. Some tax breaks that preparers look out for are the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which is a tax break for those with a household income of less than $59,187, the Child Tax Credit, and the Tax Credit for the Elderly. Preparers also ensure that filers submit all required documents to receive their refund as quickly as possible.

VITA is a nationwide program with over 3,000 sites nationwide and an estimated $1.8 billion in refunds to date. In 2023, United Way of Greater Atlanta completed over 9,500 returns, yielding over $16 million in total economic impact. This year, their goal is to complete 12,000 returns.
