Who will be airport’s new GM? We will find out on Monday

By Maria Saporta

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed intends to hold a City Hall press conference on Monday at 2 p.m. to announce his pick for a new general manager for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

It’s down to two finalists — Lester Robinson, former general manager of Detroit’s Airport Authority, and Louis Miller, former general manager of Tampa’s airport. The third finalist, John Clark, withdrew his name on Friday. Clark is the director and CEO of the Indianapolis Airport Authority.

Well, for what it’s worth, I’m putting my money down on Robinson.

It has been widely speculated that Robinson has been top choice of Delta Air Lines, the largest airline serving Hartsfield-Jackson. Delta has worked with Robinson in Detroit, which serves as a key hub for the Atlanta-based airline.

It doesn’t hurt that Robinson also is an African-American. The City of Atlanta is viewed as a place of opportunity for up-and-coming African-American leaders.

At a dinner Friday evening, Reed said there would be an announcement by Tuesday (at least 10 days later than when he had planned to hold a press conference to announce his pick).

Asked if Robinson was his pick, Reed just smiled.

We’ll find out for sure later today.
