Build a better mousetrap and the world will be a path to your door. Given that the U.S. Patent Office says there have been over 4,400 patents issued for various types of mousetraps, many people must have taken that epigram to heart. And though, it is unlikely that you will find the mousetrap high-up on any list of the world’s greatest inventions, in no way does that lessen the value of the mousetrap to society. In fact, many of the world’s most helpful inventions don’t receive the credit they should. Some that come to mind include zippers, eyeglasses, toothpaste, the flush toilet, Post-It Notes, and that metal strainer thingy that fits in your sink to keep the pipes flowing…all underappreciated. Such is the case with the subject of this week’s story. It’s a device that literally changed the world and the way we live but, alas, it doesn’t hold up when compared to the wheel, the printing press, Penicillin, the light bulb, and the use of fire. None the less, where would we be without it? It’s a question we examine on this week’s Stories of Atlanta.
