Column: Woodruff Arts Center campaign is most ambitious ever

The Woodruff Arts Center has set its most ambitious corporate campaign goal in its history — $9.2 million — compared with the $9 million raised in the last campaign.

The campaign, which is being chaired by Paul Bowers, president and CEO of Georgia Power, will go until next spring.

Atlanta Falcons have options if new stadium deal with state falls through

As the Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia World Congress Center Authority continue negotiating toward an agreement on a new retractable-roof stadium, the question must be asked — what if the deal falls through.

Although it is not something team owners or city and state officials want to talk about, the Atlanta Falcons would have options.

Women make significant gains on boards of Georgia companies in 2012

A glass ceiling has been broken by women serving on the boards of Georgia’s public companies.

For the first time ever, more than 10 percent of all the board seats at the companies are held by women. That translates to 106 of the 1,017 total board seats — or 10.4 percent. In 2011, it was 9.6 percent. By comparison, in 2001 that percentage was only 5.5 percent.

Column: Global Cities Initiative to kick off 2013 program in Atlanta

JP Morgan Chase and the Brookings Institute have teamed up on an initiative to help cities become more globally competitive.

The Global Cities Initiative, a $10 million, five-year program, will be coming to Atlanta on March 19 and 20. It is one of five cities that will be part of the initiative in 2013. The other cities are Houston (May 14-15), Dallas (May 16), Denver (June 25-26) and Mexico City (Nov. 11-15).

Women’s Foundation study drills down on poverty in Atlanta

Breaking the cycle of generational poverty in metro Atlanta will depend on reducing the number of teenage pregnancies and providing early education for children in need.

Those are a couple of the findings in a new Atlanta Women’s Foundation research study that was done by The Schapiro Group after a year of comprehensive analysis, interviews and voter polls.

16 Georgia nonprofits rank among top 400 U.S. charities in donations

Georgia is still one of the most important nonprofit centers in the country, according to the 2012 Philanthropy 400 list, which shows that five of the nation’s top 20 charities are based in the state.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy has been putting together this list for 21 years — measuring the amount that each charity receives in private donations. A total of 16 of the nation’s top 400 charities are based in Georgia.

Column: Agnes Scott College taking $100 million campaign public

Agnes Scott College will publicly launch its $100 million “Greatness Before Us” campaign on Oct. 26.

More than half of the money — $58.2 million — has already been raised during the quiet phase of the campaign.

The same evening, the college also will launch its 1889 Society — for individuals and foundations that have given $500,000 or more to the institution, according to Elizabeth Kiss, president of Agnes Scott.

Atlantan Stacey Stewart takes No. 1 spot at United Way USA

Atlanta’s presence at the national United Way organization continues to grow.

Atlanta native Stacey Stewart has become the first-ever president of United Way USA — the No. 2 leader within the international organization.

Stewart reports to Brian Gallagher, CEO of United Way Worldwide, who worked for the United Way of Greater Atlanta from 1990 to 1996.

Column: Atlanta BeltLine opens first leg, begins search for next CEO

Atlanta BeltLine will dedicate its first major leg — the Eastside Trail — on Oct. 15, a 2.25 mile pedestrian and bicycle path connecting Piedmont Park with Inman Park.

It also will give the public an opportunity to experience the ambitious project, which eventually will be a 22-mile ring around the central city with trails, parks, transit with new residential, office and retail developments.

“Now is a good time to lead this effort because we can continue the momentum,” said Lisa Gordon, who has been acting chief executive of the organization since August when Brian Leary stepped down amid controversy. “The good news is that I’ve been with the team for almost three years as COO.”

Column: Top IBM Georgia executive, Pat Falotico, to lead United Way drive

The United Way of Greater Atlanta has selected its 2013 campaign chair — Pat Falotico, senior state executive for IBM in Georgia.

Falotico has been serving on the United Way board for more than a year and has chaired IBM’s internal campaign for the past four years.
“I see this a great opportunity,” Falotico said. “I love United Way, and it also gives me an opportunity to represent IBM in the community. I’m really excited about it.”

Chairing the annual United Way is one of the most demanding civic jobs in town. The campaign chair heads up the effort that has been raising more than $80 million a year for the past several years.

Crum & Forster building — past and future collide at Georgia Tech

After more than four years of a protracted preservation battle, the fate of a historic Midtown building is in question.

The battle has pitted the preservation community and the neighborhood against the Georgia Tech Foundation, which has been seeking a demolition permit for the 84-year-old Crum & Forster building at 771 Spring St. since May 2008.

Column: Atlanta’s Cartoon Network celebrates 20th anniversary

When Atlanta media visionary Ted Turner decided to create a cable channel that would air just cartoons, he was ridiculed.

But on Oct. 1, the Cartoon Network will celebrate its 20th anniversary, and Turner Broadcasting System is having the last laugh.

“We are a network that has fantastic momentum,” said Stuart Snyder, president of the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. “We are just completing our third quarter — the most watched quarter in our history in prime time.”

Atlanta becoming a world-class center of excellence for autism research

It was June 2010 and philanthropist Bernie Marcus was in a four-hour marathon meeting trying to convince Dr. Ami Klin that he should leave a tenured post at Yale University where he had spent 20 years working on cutting-edge autism research.

Klin had submitted an 11-page vision statement of what he would hope to accomplish if he were to move to Georgia to become director of the Marcus Autism Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and a Georgia Research Alliance eminent scholar at Emory University’s School of Medicine.

Column: How MIT’s rejection of Ernest Scheller led to $50M gift for Tech

Georgia Tech is lucky that MIT did not accept Ernest Scheller Jr. as a student in 1947.

But Georgia Tech did. And on Friday, Sept. 21, Georgia Tech’s College of Management is being formally renamed the Ernest Scheller Jr. College of Business thanks to a $50 million gift from the 1952 alum.

It is the largest alumni gift that Georgia Tech has ever received, and it is the largest the university has received from a living donor.

In a telephone interview on Sept. 17 — his 83rd birthday, Scheller explained that Georgia Tech “played a big part in thesuccess I’ve enjoyed later in life.”
