Column: Mark Banta named CEO of Piedmont Park Conservancy

The Piedmont Park Conservancy board has selected Mark Banta as its new president and CEO to run the 25-year-old organization starting July 1.

Banta, who has been serving as the Conservancy’s chief operating officer since January, spent 16 years (from 1996 to 2012) as the general manager of Centennial Olympic Park.

Column: Woodruff Arts Center campaign raises record $9.6 million

Not only did SunTrust Banks CEO Bill Rogers set a record-breaking goal – $9.5 million – for the 2013-2014 Woodruff Arts Center campaign, but Rogers and his campaign team also ended up surpassing it – raising $9.6 million – a historic high for an annual campaign that dates back to 1968, the Woodruff Arts Center told Atlanta Business Chronicle.

MARTA looks to invite developers to build on top of its urban rail stations

For the first time, MARTA plans to find out how much desire developers have to build high-rise mixed-use projects over the transit authority’s urban train stations.

MARTA will solicit a “request for expressions of interest” later this summer to lease the air rights over intown train stations. Although MARTA would not specifically identify them, the stations are thought to include North Avenue, Midtown, Arts Center and Lenox.

The Council for Quality Growth has tapped real estate businessman Steve Selig as the recipient of the 2014 Four Pillar Award.

The award is one of the most prestigious annual recognitions given to leaders who have had a major impact on the Atlanta region – from Tom Cousins to Arthur Blank to Shirley Franklin to Johnny Isakson to John Portman.

“It reads like a Who’s Who. These are all people I’ve looked up to and learned from,” Selig said in an interview from his company’s offices on Spring Street. “It’s overwhelming.”

Column: Atlanta’s United Way raised $74 million with 2013 campaign

United Way of Greater Atlanta enjoyed its second consecutive increase in its fundraising campaign, announcing April 29 that its 2013 campaign raised $74.15 million.

Milton Little, United Way’s president and CEO, said it also was the third increase in four years, which was an indicator that the Atlanta economy had stabilized.

“We celebrate our success but we don’t take it for granted,” Little said. “The reality for all of us in this fundraising world is that the challenges still persist. But the worst direct impact of the recession is behind us.”

Integral’s GM project to be something totally new for region

Developer Egbert Perry wants to transform the idle Doraville, Ga., General Motors Corp. plant into a thriving transit destination.

Perry, chairman and CEO of Atlanta-based The Integral Group LLC, confirmed the company could complete the acquisition of the 162-acre site by August.

Perry, one of the Atlanta’s best-known developers and chairman of Fannie Mae, is also teaming with Roswell, Ga.-based Macauley + Schmit on the project. The Integral-Macauley development group has the property under contract.

The site has been one of metro Atlanta’s most intriguing, since GM closed its plant in 2008 as part of a major restructuring.

Genuine Parts may move corporate HQ due to new Cobb Braves stadium

Genuine Parts Co. is considering moving from its current corporate headquarters located next door to the site of the new Braves stadium.

The Fortune 500 company, and Braves partner, best known for its NAPA auto parts stores, has had its headquarters at 2999 Circle 75 Parkway in Cobb County since 1979.

“We haven’t made a decision one way or another,” said Thomas Gallagher, chairman and CEO. “We are looking at several options. We have the option of staying right here, which we may do. We have the option of going to Wildwood. There are also some options outside of Cobb County.”

Column: Patriots Dinner in June will honor wounded warriors
