The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation announced grant funding for 18 historic sites across the state, including $125,000 from the 1772 Foundation Grants for Georgia.

Since 2023, the 1772 Foundation has partnered with the Georgia Trust to match historic grants. This year it gave funds to 14 Georgia organizations to help maintain their historic sites. The trust also awarded dollars through the Callahan Incentive Grant and the Wade and Mary Lu Mitchell African American Heritage Preservation Grant programs.

The funds will pay for critical preservation, like stabilizing building foundations, restoring stained glass and fixing historic windows.

“From house museums and historic churches, to schools, theaters and community landmarks, these projects demonstrate the remarkable range of places that contribute to Georgia’s heritage,” Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation CEO W. Wright Mitchell said.

The grant cycle marks the second annual award of the Wade and Mary Lu Mitchell grant, named after the trust CEO’s parents for their legacy of supporting African American causes in Atlanta.

The Herndon Foundation trustees, recipients of $10,000 in grant funding, said the dollars would pay for an “urgently needed” roof rehabilitation to address water infiltration threatening the museum’s structure and collections.

“Their funds will help us restore and protect the home so it remains a living testament to what vision, discipline and self-determination can achieve,” the trustees said in a statement. “Together we are ensuring the Herndon legacy continues to inspire and propel generations towards a sustainable and prosperous future.”
