For nearly 24 years, William B. Hartsfield was the face of Atlanta. And being the face of a growing city apparently required a mayor who would do just about anything.
Fortunately, photographers were there to capture it.
This week, Stories of Atlanta steps away from the usual history lesson and into the photo album for a revealing look at the sorts of things a mayor is called upon to do when one becomes the face of a city. Dignity be damned.
Taken together, the photographs offer an entertaining glimpse of the man behind the office…and we end with one photograph that may have required more courage from the mayor than all the other photos combined.
