Each June, NeighborWorks America and its network of local organizations mobilize tens of thousands of volunteers, business people, neighbors, friends and local and national elected and civic leaders in a week of neighborhood change and awareness.  As a NeighborWorks network member, Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership (ANDP) will convene neighborhood leaders from throughout metro Atlanta for a special day of creating opportunities to improve neighborhood safety and build more collaborative community-police relationships.
A team of neighborhood leaders from Atlanta, Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton and Douglas Counties has been working with ANDP and NeighborWorks America to plan for a special neighborhood training event scheduled for June 10.  The neighborhood leaders conducted surveys in various communities throughout the region; they found that an overwhelming majority believed public safety and improving community-police relations were the most pressing issues in their areas.
Training topics will include:  identifying and addressing community safety risk factors; establishing a diverse network of partners in neighborhood safety (residents, businesses, government, nonprofits, law enforcement);  building a common agenda; creating effective working relationships between the community and police through collaborative problem solving partnerships; and empowering residents to reduce the threats of violence in their neighborhoods.
In addition, the event will include a special, facilitated dialogue with local police officers and neighborhood residents to help foster trust and stronger relationships that will result in safer, healthier communities.
