In 1963, the U.S. Senate was debating a bill that would change the course of American history. This week’s Stories of Atlanta recounts the courage of an Atlanta politician who chose to come to Washington D.C. and speak on that bill’s behalf. The fact that he would do so without the aid of his peers or the support of many of his constituents did not deter him from standing on what, clearly, was the right side of history.

Mayor Ivan Allen: “Atlanta, a city too busy to hate.”
Ivan Allen, Jr. was the last good Mayor of the City of Atlanta. His successors never came close to meeting the standard he set, and I see no potential successor who could come close.
Burroughston Broch As to Allen as a good mayor, I couldn’t agree more. He set the bar high and, for Atlantans, served as a point of pride.
I’ve read different accounts as to who actually coined that phrase…anybody know who should get the credit?
Great video.
Lance Russell I know the phrase originated during the William B. Hartsfield administration, but I don’t know if he himself coined it. I agree that Ivan Allen was the best mayor, closely followed by Hartsfield. I worked in news at the time and filmed (real film) many interviews and events with Mayor Allen. I saw his bravery when he stood atop the car in Summerhill and when he was at Boulevard that same summer in 1966. He was always fair and honest and a true gentleman. BTW, I love your series, Lance.
David Patterson Lance Russell Lance Russell I’ve read accounts of Allen at Summerhill but have never heard the story first hand from one who was there. I’ll look forward to that. So glad you’re enjoying the series. Standing on the shoulders of those who came before us, we are all a part of Atlanta’s continuing story. Thank you for telling your story.
