The King Center is on track to have another stellar fund-raising event at its annual Salute to Greatness dinner on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 when it will honor former President Bill Clinton.
Clinton, founder of the Clinton Global Initiative and the Clinton Foundation, will receive the Salute to Greatness Award – traditionally the King Center’s highest honor.
The timing is fortuitous. Clinton will be in Atlanta just when there will be mounting speculation about when his wife – Hillary Clinton – will be announcing whether she will be running for president in 2016.
The Kaiser Corp. will receive the corporate 2015 Salute to Greatness Award.
“The dinner is our primary fundraiser and provides an opportunity for the King Center to recognize an individual and a corporation that reflect excellence in leadership and a commitment to social responsibility in the spirit of my father,” said Bernice A. King, CEO of the King Center, in a release.
Accepting the award for Kaiser Permanente will be Bernard J. Tyson, its chairman and CEO. The release stated that Kaiser Permanente is being presented the award because of its outstanding philanthropic efforts and commitment to diversity in the workplace, including the service that its employees provide through the corporation’s Community Giving Campaign.
The King Center also will present two Coretta Scott King A.N.G.E.L. (“Advancing Nonviolence through Generations of Exceptional Leadership”) Awards at the dinner.
This award recognizes a young leader between the ages of 12 and 25 as well as a youth organization or initiative that exemplifies exceptional leadership in the areas of peace, social justice and nonviolent social change.
The 2015 youth recipient will be 13-year old, Aidan Thomas Hornaday, founder of Aidan Cares, for his commitment to helping those in need through philanthropic and humanitarian efforts, while “teaching a generation to give,” and encouraging parents to teach their children to give.
The award recipient for the youth initiative is the Tangelo Park Program, established by Harris Rosen. The initiative was selected “…because it is one of our nation’s most dynamic and creative philanthropic projects and is a powerful example of how focusing humanitarian efforts, in a single geographic location, helps to transform lives,” Bernice King stated i the release.
Previous recipients of the Salute to Greatness Award have included Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus and the lead singer of U2 – Bono.
The dinner will take place during the annual King holiday celebration on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at Atlanta’s Hyatt Regency Hotel.
