“Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story” is a different sort of feel-good movie.
Perry feels good about himself, and by the end, you’ll feel good about him, too.
Warts? To paraphrase the bandits in the Bogart movie, “The Treasure of Sierra Madre,” we don’t need no stinkin’ warts.

No matter where you come down on his artistry, Perry is inarguably a phenomenon: a Black man who turned a painful childhood and a run of rough times into a triumph. A hugely successful multi-hyphenate – writer-director-producer-star – he saw an underserved audience and, well, served it. Served it a mix of humor, farce, melodrama and church-bred morality that spoke specifically to what was once (perhaps still) known as the Chitlin’ Circuit, i.e., a Black middle class who know a race-based insight when they hear it.
A comparison might be made with the Borscht Belt at its height. You didn’t have to be Jewish to get the jokes (and the jibes), but it helped.
Perry grew up in New Orleans. However, as he says in the film, “New Orleans didn’t produce Tyler Perry. Atlanta produced Tyler Perry.”
He was born Emmett Perry Jr. but his father was so monstrous (the two are estranged) that the son changed his name. His mother, however, was one of those near saints; she pretty much saved his life (hence the picture’s title).
But then, Perry saved his own life, too. After a rocky start in theatre – most of us have heard the living-in-his-car stories – he found his audience. More importantly, they found him. He went from 30 people in the 14thStreet Playhouse to selling out the Fox. The magic word: Madea.

Played in drag by Perry, she was an outspoken, no-nonsense, often hilarious figure, dispensing life lessons and one-liners with equal aplomb. Madea soon transferred to film, which translated into millions (billions?) for Perry. Let’s not forget that he is the first Black man ever to own a movie studio.
There are bumps on the road. Critics – read, mostly white critics – had no idea what to make of Perry’s movies. Spike Lee calls them – and I’m quoting directly here – “c**nery buffoonery.” Someone else calls them “cinematic malt liquor for the masses.” Still, the cameras keep rolling and the bucks keep rolling in.
But “Maxine’s Baby” isn’t interested in the bad stuff. Falling just short of hagiography, the documentary is a celebration of someone who just wouldn’t give up. Near the end, we attend the grand opening of Tyler Perry Studios with its soundstages named after Sidney Poitier, Whoopi Goldberg, Denzel Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Ossie Davis, Ruby Lee and, yes, Spike Lee. It’s as glam packed as the Oscars.
“Maxine’s Baby” is the Tyler Perry documentary those aforementioned “underserved audiences” would like to see. And there’s not a thing wrong with that.

I love you Emmett (Tyler) Perry.
Tyler you’re the best. My granddaughter is blind she 15 years old and she know everyone of your movies and plays and all the cast member. I hope one day I can take her to met you. We come to Atlanta Children Healthcare once a year for her to get check to make sure her cancer hasn’t came back. She really love you.
Congratulations Mr Tyler Perry on your achievements.
Thank you so much for uplifting all of us. I personally believe that one of your greatest accomplishments is found in your role as Motivational Speaker in various Churches around the World where you encourage us by sharing your experiences on how the Lord Has Shown you the ways to fulfill your dreams. Maxine is very proud of you. One of your speeches in 2018 on TBN, has tremendously transformed my life. You said: “When God Has a Dream for You, it is Your Dream.” That’s all I needed to hear to focus on HIM ALONE and to obey HIS Orders. That speech was my turning point in my life.
Thank you Mr Tyler Perry.
It’s Ruby DEE, not Lee. She and her husband Ossie Davis are both Icons in the Black community so please don’t get that wrong ever again.
Also Tyler is NOT the first Black man to own his own tv studio at all. This is why we like telling our own stories. Tim Reid had his own studio decades ago and even he’s not the first!
Tyler is the first to own one so big! Also, Tyler’s studio is an old confederate barracks! That’s right. It’s one of the exact spots where actual Hate of Humanity was celebrated and fought for; something all whites should be ashamed of for eternity.
These facts are only a google search away. It says something when you don’t care about your subject. And when that subject is Black people and their successes, (because this country treats us like a monolith) it is downright offensive to phone it in.
Do better.
Tyler Perry you deserve awards you show much love to our community you give back because you were homeless you know how people were going through in the lifetime you grew up a little boy shouldn’t have to grow up like that our pair of shoes show love to the kids and I’m glad you came out of that you was a strong young man I am so sorry that you had to grow up like that but you have a mother that loves you too and a grandma to show you how to be a young man I am so glad that you grow up to be obsessful young black man you get back and you show must love for us then why we have to show love from you too but without you playing Madea movie I appreciate it because you put a slide on my face and I’m just glad that you put them movie out and you may have $1,000 a million dollar movie and we stand behind you 100% keep up the good work love you always
Tyler Perry is without a doubt an ICON! A lifted himself up after all of his trials and tribulations inclusive of horrible fatherly abuse, and sexual abuse. I love his tenacity of NEVER GIVING UP! I truly hope and pray he NEVER GIVES UP! Why? Because we know the “powers that be” sooner or later comes to destroy our BLACKS who strive to REALLY help ‘US’ by continuing to go farther and farther in the world and in life! May God continue to bless Tyler Perry as he continues to employ US without the help of Whites! (He employs some Whites, yes, but his focus is on US! Thank goodness!

🤦🏾
🤦🏽♂️
Maxine’s Baby was the documentary that opened my eyes to not only Tyler Perry’s life and the events that shaped his life. I now understand the powers that he was up against at home, in the community and internally. I now even understand how his struggle gave him the ammunition to keep moving. Even in his own community today, there are those who still put him down in the name of what it looks like to them! I remember about 25-30+ years ago his plays were in the NATIONAL THEATER and after the standing ovation he would come on stage, introduce himself and explain how he was going to try different endings and wanted feedback from the audience.
Today he continues that behavior of continuing to change the end until he gets it right in spite of success the first time. It is that ethic that makes him someone that I look up to, point to as a success and advocate for more. Those who call him Clown and a disgrace I encourage you to look again until you get it right
Mr.Perry God isn’t finished with you yet!
Black Americans have come along way in this hostile, lack of equal justice in this country of ours, yet so many of our own people have this “pull him or her; down attitude when one of our own pull themselves up. I think all of mankind have short comings, let’s be supportive or stay out of it. I have ideas of what Mr. Tyler can differently but 💯 he doesn’t need me in that capacity. Mr. T Perry has my support of “Black Excellence; in this country of ours. My rambling my support. Mr. Perry thank sir.
Tyler Perry your life speaks for so many. I live in Sacramento California I went to many of your plays many years ago. It was the greatest treat for so many young ladies that I raised and took to see your plays. I foster girls for 25 years six at a time in my home and you alone allowed them to see no matter what they went though they could be somebody. I look back at them now where some of them are in their forties and doing well regardless of their past circumstances. Your life allowed them to know they could make it and they did, I’m so proud of you and my girls.for what your life and my caring has done for them. I love you very much for that, so keep up the good work.helping people overcome. I see mentor other foster parents to continue helping these your girls to become successful young ladies. The Bible says we all we put here to help one another and that is what you do. I am now working in my small church to build and help my community. Our
New foundation is called Grace community development foundation. We want to help our community and young people to thrive no matter what their circumstances were. Thank you we love you 🙏🏿. (Working to build a website)

🙄🤔 (real quick) rt, tbh “Tyler Perry” is actually not a real person. He is a fictional character; he doesn’t exist at all. It’s actually “Will Smith” plays the role of “Tyler Perry”
