By the end of 1845, people in the region had begun to believe that there just might be something to the young town of Atlanta. Any who remained skeptical of the hype found it harder to do so with the arrival of the first Macon and Western train. You’ll remember that Cousin John Thrasher had come to the area when it was still wilderness to build an embankment for the Monroe railroad. In the ensuing years, however, the Monroe Railroad went bankrupt, and its charter was acquired by the Macon and Western Railroad company.
In the coming years, Atlanta would see an influx of people moving into the area, and for the first time in its history, Atlanta would begin to resemble a real community. It’s the tale of a 3-train town in this week’s Stories of Atlanta.

Thank you for sharing this insightful piece about the early days of Atlanta! The narrative beautifully captures the transformation of a wilderness into a thriving community, highlighting the pivotal role of the Macon and Western Railroad. It’s fascinating to see how the arrival of the first train marked a significant turning point in Atlanta’s history. Great job on bringing this story to life!
