The new memoir by the Rev. C.T. Vivian is a morally based guidebook for today’s social activists as much as it is a recollection of Martin’s path from Depression-era Missouri to the round table of the Civil Rights movement in Nashville and Atlanta.

It felt like a gut punch. Losing C.T. Vivian and John Lewis on the same day – July 17 – was almost too much to bear. The phrase I kept repeating in my head was: “We are losing Atlanta’s greatest generation.”

Our 2020 Leadership Atlanta class on Saturday traveled to Montgomery and Selma to confront the more sordid aspects of our nation’s shameful past and present – while asking ourselves the question civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. asked 53 years ago: “Where do we go from here?”

Remembering Martin Luther King Jr., preserving his teachings and saving Atlanta’s history
Sometimes we take for granted Atlanta’s living history as the home of civil rights.
That was reinforced to me on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 5 when the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation hosted a program featuring the documentary – King in the Wilderness – on the last three years of Martin Luther King Jr.’s life.
