Stories of Atlanta

Man of the house

When George moved from his home in Alabama to the City of Atlanta, he was only 16 years old but, none the less, he was acutely aware that the responsibility for the well-being of his mother and his 5-siblings rested squarely on his shoulders. Amid the fervor and chaos of an Atlanta recovering from the ravages of the Civil War, the young man took it upon himself to find a job and then set out to build his family a home. The job he found would ultimately make George a household name throughout the South and the house he built, still stands to this day. It’s the tale of a young man coming of age in the big city on this week’s Stories of Atlanta.
