Thought Leader Transit

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) recently partnered with Page Turners Make Great Learners to provide an interactive reading experience for kindergarten students.

Author and Newbery Award winner, Matt de la Pena, traveled from his hometown of Brooklyn, New York to Atlanta to narrate his book, Last Stop on Market Street. The story takes place on a city bus as a grandmother and her grandson travel from church to a homeless shelter to volunteer. The boy begins the journey seeing the bus and surrounding neighborhoods as ugly and asking his Nana “Why do we have to take the bus?” and “Why do we have to go on the dirty side of town?” Nana’s gentle answers provide the lesson of the book, that there is beauty all around us if we choose to see it.

Community leaders acted out portions of the story in real time as students rode a MARTA bus. MARTA Deputy General Manager Rob Troup was among those on board.

“MARTA is proud to partner with Page Turners Make Great Learners to bring this award-winning book to life,” said MARTA General Manager & CEO Jeffrey Parker. “You often see people enjoying a book as they ride the bus. It is great fun to become part of the story.”

The students discussed the themes of the story and each received an autographed copy of Last Stop on Market Street to take home
