For decades, I have looked at the Breuer-designed Central Library and longed for the building that used to stand at that same corner, the Carnegie Library: a statuesque building that had adorned that site from 1902 until it was demolished in 1977. Communities in Schools Atlanta recently held its annual Choose Success Award Dinner and spotlighted two of its co-founders – Neil Shorthouse and Bill Milliken, and two of its strongest backers – real estate leader George Johnson and philanthropist Anne Cox Chambers.
Atlanta has been an entrepreneurial city for nonprofits and perhaps no organization symbolizes that better than Communities in Schools.
