Jeff Parker: ‘It’s really the time and place for MARTA’

When he was only 18 years old while at Northeastern University, Jeffrey A. Parker picked the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for his internship so he could get a free transit pass. That launched Parker’s public transit career and led to him becoming MARTA’s new CEO and general manager. The MARTA board is scheduled to vote on Parker, the sole finalist, at a March 23 board meeting.

In his new job at Goodwill, Keith Parker is focused on income inequality

That sparked his affinity for Goodwill — he has been a regular donor since graduating from college, and he has served on the boards of the Goodwill of San Antonio and Goodwill of North Georgia.

Proctor Creek Greenway opens, an amenity with a little anxiety

Official Atlanta got out the big blue scissors on Monday morning, this time to cut the ribbon on some three new miles of multiuse trail along Proctor Creek. It was a morning to celebrate a creek and trail as scenic as anything in North Georgia. But not far from the surface were worries about the flip side of fancy new public works in an area that’s long been bypassed by prosperity.

Column: Trust for Public Land reaches fundraising goal for Westside park

The Trust for Public Land has reached its $12.7 million goal to build out the Rodney Cook Sr. Park in Vine City, with the hope that it will be open in time for the Super Bowl in February 2019.

George Dusenbury, state director of the Trust for Public Land, said the grand vision for the park appealed to both the community and the philanthropic community.

Nearly 20 years ago, key business and government leaders heralded the creation of a new transportation authority that would tackle metro Atlanta’s traffic problems by expanding transit.

And so the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority – GRTA – was born.

At the time, there was one naysayer – the late Harry West, the longtime executive director of the Atlanta Regional Commission.
